The Egg Donation Process

We are here to guide you through each step of the egg donation process from creating your profile to matching and the donation procedure. We are available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and will make sure that you are comfortable with the process and that all of your needs are met while protecting your privacy.

Here is a glimpse into the general steps involved in the egg donation process:

  • Prospective egg donors typically start by filling out an online application with an egg donation agency or fertility clinic. The application covers personal and medical history, lifestyle factors, and the donor's motivation for participating. Some agencies may also require photos and a video interview.

  • Once the application is accepted, the donor is entered into a database where intended parents can review profiles. The matching process involves compatibility assessments based on various criteria, including physical characteristics, educational background, and any specific preferences outlined by the intended parents.

  • After a match is made, the donor undergoes a comprehensive medical screening. This involves physical and gynecological exams, blood tests, genetic screenings, and psychological evaluations. The goal is to ensure the donor is in good health, has a suitable reproductive system, and carries no genetic conditions that could be passed on to offspring.

  • Once medical screenings are successful, legal contracts are drafted to outline the rights and responsibilities of both parties—the donor and the intended parents. This agreement covers issues such as compensation, confidentiality, and the relinquishment of parental rights. Legal counsel is often involved in the drafting and review process.

  • Upon contract signing, the egg donor begins a prescribed series of medications to synchronize her menstrual cycle with the recipient's. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Throughout this process, the donor undergoes regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds. When the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure, known as egg retrieval, is performed to collect the eggs from the ovaries. Donors will be required to travel to San Diego for this final stage of the egg donation process. The eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the intended mother or surrogate's uterus.
